This painting depicts a scene from the annual ‘Wassail’ celebration, usually celebrated on Twelfth Night. This traditional festival associated with orchards and cider was comprised of music, dance and song, festivities centred around toasting the good health of the apple trees that would bear the crop for the following year’s cider, a mid-winter counterpart to the traditional autumn harvest festival.
