This study is based on reference material gathered from a visit to the Wild Wings Birds of Prey centre, near Risley in Cheshire.

These large Accipter hawks are rare breeders in the UK, and are most often seen during spring when both the male and female birds display over their territory with a distinctive slow, lazy, exaggerated flapping motion when their wings wings are raised and lowered well above and below the horizontal.Seeing the adult bird up close is an amazing experience, their stunning golden-orange eyes given them a distinctive and well-deserved fearsome appearance.

I wanted to portray the bird on the gloved hand, but didn’t really like the gauntlet the falconry was using, so actually made it up using various other reference sources. Hopefully for those in the know I’ve managed to portray it realistically!
