Up until the First World War, cider played an important role in the rural economy of Britain for nearly a thousand years. Farms everywhere would have their individual orchards, with the largest proportion of the land being given over to cider apples, which supplied an invaluable yearly crop. A daily allowance of about half a gallon (2-3 litres) constituted a large proportion of a labourer’s weekly wage.

Many cider apples, and indeed perry pears, have  high diuretic properties, hence the colloquial name of ‘Cripplecock’ Farmyard Scrumpy, adorning this rather fun-shaped ceramic flagon.
