The Red Grouse is a relatively common breeding bird across areas of moorland in northern England and other parts of the UK. I watched this individual from the safe vantage point of the car, enabling me to study him at relatively close-quarters without disturbance. They have a beautifully intricate plumage pattern, full of rich warm tones varying from golden-orange to deep brown, but perhaps the most prominent feature is the stunningly bright red comb above the eye, which is best seen during the breeding season on the male bird in particular.
