This fairly common sparrow inhabits coastal salt marshes, especially those with large areas of marshy vegetation. Predominantly summer visitor to the western United States, a resident population breeds along the Atlantic coast from Maine to Virginia, with western birds wintering along the coast from New Jersey to Florida.
