During the breeding season, this bird inhabits coniferous and mixed forests and woodlands, usually in dense vegetation alongside boggy margins, ponds and rocky outcrops. In winter, it stays in dense bushy habitats, sometimes in urban areas where it is a common visitor to bird feeders. This species breeds across much of Canada and the northeastern United States, wintering in the eastern half of the US, the west coast and in southwestern British Columbia.
