These studies were made from observing an adult male green woodpecker at the Standards Orchard, at Moccas in Herefordshire. Green woodpeckers are widespread breeding birds in Britain, favouring mature woods and parkland with open spaces in which to feed. Old orchards, such as this one, provide ideal haunts for these gawky-looking birds, having areas of unimproved grassland habitat that support large populations of ants, on which the birds feed.
